5 Hair Trends We LOVE from NYFW

1. Buns Are IN — with a Twist

As someone who frequently ends the day with her hair thrown up in a knot, I appreciate that, not just buns, but really creative and cute buns are going to be in. While I admire the perfect balance of ease and sophistication of the top knot, I’m ready to have the option of these chic and more put together looking styles. In particular, I’m absolutely, without a doubt, crazy about the New Wave Ballerina Bun that Eiji Yamane gave the models using René Furterer products at the Zang Toi. It’s so feminine and just different enough, and I can’t wait to try it.

2. Untextured and Unstyled

I’ve seen a lot of this so-called “untextured” and “unstyled” style, but I prefer to think of it as “Monday.” My whole life, my hair has run the gamet from wavy to curly (we’ve currently in a wavy phase), and it’s often a little (OK, let’s be honest: a LOT) imperfect. I get tired of hearing, “this is how they do X in Europe,” but I have to admit that when I went abroad in college, I loved fitting in with my slightly frizzy, (at the time) curly hair. Now that style seems to be coming to the U.S. and I couldn’t be happier about it. This was a look that AVEDA did for the Steven Alan show.

3. Va-va-va-VOLUME

I think that Jen cheered audibly when we saw models waltzing down the runway with huge, luscious locks. This isn’t your mother’s volume. The biggest of the big might have been the Reem Acra show, where Didier Malige gave models super volume with René Furterer products. It’s a cheeky, modern twist on the 70s that fluffed up crimped-looking hair (the effect was achieved with fishtail braids and flat irons) to give something that was like Farrah Fawcett with an afro.

4. Braids Are Back

As a kid, I was all about braids. And even though they’ve never gone out of style, per se, it seemed like they were just EVERYWHERE at this fashion week. And I love it. I do. Seven-year-old Natalie would just die with happiness. Braids are such a cute way to add a little pizzazz to your style. Check out Jen’s french braid bun tutorial for a cute twist on a top knot that you’ll definitely be rocking across the next few seasons.

5. Low Ponytails Are Where It’s At

See you later, sporty tail, there’s a new pony in town. Seriously, I’m really into the low ponytail trend because I pocket a secret desire to look like a librarian. I really dig what AVEDA creative director Antionette Beenders did at the Osklen Show. It was a low ponytail with a twist — literally. It was such a smart, sleek, and interesting look on the models.
