Way back in January, I was sent a sample of Caudalie Vinosource Quenching Sorbet Creme ($40.00 retail).  Containing Caudalie’s famous grape seed polyphenols, the creme claims to quickly soothe and calm the skin.
What I Loved
Grape seed extract, also known as Vitis vinifera, pine bark, Pinus maritima, and Pycnogenol, has an antioxidant capacity derived from oligomeric proanthocyanidins, usually referred to as simply proanthocyanidins. Â According to the blog of renowned dermatologist Dr. Leslie Baumann, M.D., proanthocyanidins have captured the popular imagination, convincing many that grape seed extract can improve skin elasticity and tone, prevent or ameliorate scars and stretch marks, and prevent or reduce wrinkling by protecting against UV radiation.
In reality, Dr. Baumann asserts that grape seed extract has the most convincing evidence in protecting against UV radiation. Â Grape seed extract has been found to be a better scavenger of free radicals than vitamins C and E, according to research published in Research Communications of Pathology and Pharmacology. Â As Dr. Baumann mentions, this is most likely due to the fact that grape seed extract is more bioavailable than vitamins C or E, according to a study in Toxicology. Â So Caudalie Vinosource Quenching Sorbet Creme is definitely a great possible UV protection booster when used under sunscreen.
The cardiovascular effects of grape seed extract have also been found in the journal The American Society of Nutrition Sciences to work best when more than one type of grape seed is used.  Assuming (and this is a bit of stretch, I must admit) that the synergistic effect applies to the skin as well, it’s a beautiful thing that Caudalie Vinosource Quenching Sorbet Creme contains two separate forms of grape seed extract:  Vitis vinifera grape seed extract, as well as palmitoyl grape seed extract.  Awesome.
What I Didn’t Like
I used the entire bottle of Caudalie Vinosource Quenching Sorbet Creme and I rather sheepishly noted that I thought my skin seemed a little worse, with a few blemishes here and there. Â I was questioning whether or not it was appropriate to do a review of the product at all when I realized that it contains chamomile, to which I am allergic. Â (!) Â So my experience is not likely to be accurate for everyone!
My other complaint is that this product claims to contain “next generation peptides” that produce “desensitizing and painkilling effects.” Â The next generation peptide is acetyl tetrapeptide-15, which does in fact have substantiated evidence supporting these claims. Â However, acetyl tetrapeptide-15 is in such a low concentration in Caudalie Vinosource Quenching Sorbet Creme that I hardly find it to be a mentionable selling point.
Best For Dry and Normal Skin Types
One of my favorite things about Caudalie Vinosource Quenching Sorbet Creme is that it feels lightweight, yet is extremely hydrating, with glycerin and shea butter included in the first five ingredients. Â It kept my normal/sensitive skin feeling moisturized all day long. Â With that said, those with oily skin probably would benefit more from Caudalie Cleansing Water, featuring less hydration but a high concentration of Vitis vinifera grape seed extract. Â Note that Caudalie Beauty Elixir has mostly bitter orange water and not grape seed extract, so while it feels great on the skin, it’s more of a complement to Caudalie Vinosource Quenching Sorbet Creme than a substitute.
Bottom Line
Well, if I wasn’t allergic to the chamomile in Caudalie Vinosource Quenching Sorbet Creme, I would say that this is a solid product with excellent preventative anti-aging potential. Â I love its high concentration of grape seed extract, and the fact that it contains mostly natural or plant-derived ingredients will appeal to even the pickiest of skin care customers. Â I love its potential for dry/normal skin, though I think Caudalie Cleansing Water may be preferred for those with oily skin.
