I’m always amazed at the timing with book reviews:  There are usually a gazillion when a book first premieres, and then very few in the weeks to months after, as though an older book is like a movie that can no longer be seen in theaters.   Luckily, I’ve caught onto this trend, and have decided older books need some love too.  So I’m now reviewing the several months-old book, Can You Get Hooked on Lip Balm? by the authors of one of my favorite fellow blogs, The Beauty Brains.

Although the authors at The Beauty Brains are cosmetic chemists, Can You Get Hooked on Lip Balm? has relatively little difficult scientific jargon.  Instead, the book answers simple yet interesting beauty questions, such as how to tell unmarked cosmetics have expired, which department store products really do have cheaper doppelgangers in the drugstore, and the meaning of well-used, little-understood terms like “hypoallergenic.”

I think a lot of my readers will enjoy the book – some of the topics, such as “Are Organic Products Really Better?” have been covered on this site as well!   However, some pieces of information, such as the fact that the sialins in saliva may help to get rid of acne, did raise my eyebrow once or twice.   Still, these are trained and experienced cosmetic chemists, and I respect their opinions, even if I don’t always agree with them.  (Most?  Yes.  All?  No.)

Bottom line:  If you like FutureDerm.com, I think you’ll definitely enjoy Can You Get Hooked on Lip Balm?. I think I devoured the whole 208-pages in one great Saturday afternoon.  The book is fun-to-read and super informative, and I think any beauty product fanatic will love it.
