FutureDerm: Why did you become a dermatologist?

Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank, M.D.: I come from a family of physicians and always felt that medicine would be my chosen profession. The skin is the largest organ of the body, and I always found it interesting and challenging. As a creative and artistic person, I was drawn to cosmetic dermatology as it is the perfect balance of medicine and art.

FD: What are your favorite products?

PJF: GoodSkin Labs Equinol Dark Spot Concentrate ($16.49, amazon.com) to even out and brighten skin tone and GoodSkin Labs Tri Aktiline Deep Wrinkle Filler ($39.50, amazon.com) for an even complexion.

FD: What are your favorite treatments?

PJF: The Fraxel is the gold standard laser treatment to even skin tone, reduce pigmentation, treat fine lines, and reduce pore size. This is the most popular treatment in my practice.  Injectables such as wrinkle relaxers and wrinkle fillers offer immediate results with minimal downtime.

FD: If someone has $100 to spend on a product or treatment, what ingredients, products, or procedures do you recommend?

PJF: A serum would be the best investment. It enhances any other skincare product with potent ingredients and it is used closest to the skin. Choose a product that targets pigment and brightens the skin which is the biggest concern as we age. Many of these products contain Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), which can be beneficial; but some people do not respond well to this ingredient, and over the long term it may not be beneficial. Look for something with natural anti-oxidants such as grape, or lycopene (derived from red fruits). Caudalie Radiance Serum ($78, amazon.com) is a gentle and very effective addition to any skin care regimen, around $80. Unfortunately, there is no cosmetic procedure that will have an impact within this price range. The balance should be spent on sunscreen which is the best protection against aging skin!

FD: What is the biggest mistake you see people regularly make in skin care?

PJF: Using too many products. I am a firm believer in less is more. When choosing a skincare regimen, it is also beneficial to stick with one brand since the concept of the skincare will be uniform.

FD: What do you see as the future of skin care?

PJF: Stem Cell anti-aging research.

FD: Why should people read sites like FutureDerm.com?

PJF: There is an enormous amount of information in the media about skincare and it is important to seek out professional opinions.
